Disc Herniation

Disc Herniation

disc herniationDisc herniation is an often extremely painful condition that can occur in the cervical spine (neck) or lumbar spine. While it's sometimes known as a slipped disc or a ruptured disc, this terminology is inaccurate, as disc herniation is actually the result of the soft, jelly-like center in a spinal disc pushing out through a crack in the disc's exterior. While some people do not suffer any ill effects from disk herniation, others are deeply affected, experiencing intense pain, numbness or tingling, sciatica, or muscle weakness.

A herniated disc is often the result of gradually progressing age related disc degeneration, but it can have other causes as well. Improper lifting, the trauma of a fall, or a blow to the back can cause a herniated disk, but so can the strain of a physically demanding job. Being middle aged or overweight are both factors that can increase a patient's risk of disc herniation.

Using a variety of treatments, our chiropractors in Atlanta are able to effectively treat degenerative disc disease and herniated discs. Patients are given a thorough examination, resulting in an accurate diagnostic assessment, after which a customized treatment plan is created, to address medical concerns, using holistic therapies, such as chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage therapy.
